European Commissioner for Enlargement: The European Commission’s proposal to suspend visa-free travel for officials from Georgia is a response to the continuous democratic backsliding and the violent repression by the Georgian authorities

The European Commission’s proposal to suspend visa-free travel for officials from Georgia is a response to the continuous democratic backsliding and the violent repression by the Georgian authorities, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos wrote on her X page.

“Today’s Commission proposal to suspend visa-free travel for officials from Georgia is a response to the continuous democratic backsliding and the violent repression by the Georgian authorities against peaceful protesters, politicians and independent media.

The Commission has already redirected funding from the authorities to civil society and independent media and will look into further strengthening our support to civil society.

The EU stands with the Georgian people and their choice for a European future. The door to the EU remains open”, she tweeted.
