Michael Carpenter: Georgia’s democracy is at stake

Georgia’s democracy is at stake, Michael Carpenter, Senior Director for Europe at the US National Security Council, said in an interview with the Georgian Service of the Voice of America.

According to him, everything that Georgia has strived for years, decades, is now at stake and everything is under question.

"Georgia's democracy is at stake. Indeed, the future of the country is at stake now. What we are seeing on the streets is appalling - the violence, the use of government-sponsored actors, the so-called titushki, who are beating demonstrators, journalists and students. This is appalling and not the kind of action we should see in a democratic country. So everything that Georgia has been striving for years, decades - a future in the European Union, in NATO, security, prosperity, integration with Europe and the West - is now at stake. Everything is in question. We have limited all our financial support, we have suspended strategic partnerships," said Michael Carpenter.
