Eka Gigauri: We request that the Prosecutor's Office intervene in court with a motion to change the pretrial detention of those arrested during the protests to another form of preventive measure. There is no evidence to justify the use of imprisonment

"We request the Prosecutor's Office to intervene with a motion to change the pretrial detention of individuals arrested during the protests to a different preventive measure. In fact, throughout this period, there is no evidence to justify the use of imprisonment," said Eka Gigauri, Executive Director of the non-governmental organization Transparency International Georgia, during a briefing.

According to her, the judges who imposed pretrial detention on the young people arrested during the protests are acting in favor of the ruling party and are effectively carrying out the Prosecutor's Office's instructions.

She also revealed the names of the judges who imposed pretrial detention on the detainees.

"We have decided to identify and name the judges who are behaving in a biased manner during these specific court sessions and I will provide their names. Tamar Mchedlishvili, who considered the cases of Andro Chichinadze, Nikoloz Katsia, Aleko Elisashvili, and others. Irakli Khuskivadze, who considered the case of the founder of 'Dafioni,' Zviad Tsetskhladze, and seven other detainees. Lela Maridashvili, who considered the cases of Giorgi Akhobadze and Saba Khvitaridze. Levan Qolbaia, who considered the case of a professor arrested in Batumi and four students. Davit Mgeliashvili, who considered the cases of Saba Jikia and Anzor Kvaratskhelia. Nana Shamathava, who considered the cases of Davit Lomidze and Tengiz Zasokhashvili. Davit Kurtanidze, who considered the case of Mate Devadze. In short, these are the people who are acting in favor of the ruling party and are effectively fulfilling the instructions of the Prosecutor's Office.

Our main demand is that, due to the fact that the court is involved in political justice and does not serve the public and the law's requirements, and because detainees often speak of inhuman treatment and torture, and they also talk about being forced and under pressure to give specific testimonies. Furthermore, because the procedural guarantees for searches and seizures are not ensured throughout these processes, we ask and demand that the Prosecutor's Office intervene with a motion to change the pretrial detention of these individuals to a different preventive measure, because in fact, throughout this period, there is no evidence to justify the use of imprisonment," Gigauri stated.
