Mykhailo Podolyak: The resistance in the streets of Tbilisi, Kutaisi, and Rustavi indicates that the majority of Georgian citizens are not interested in the policies pursued by 'Georgian Dream,' a pro-Russian party

The resistance in the streets of Tbilisi, Kutaisi, and Rustavi indicates that the absolute majority of Georgian citizens are genuinely not interested in the policies pursued by "Georgian Dream," a pro-Russian party, said Mykhailo Podolyak, Advisor to the President of Ukraine, in an interview with Lithuanian TV channel Delfi.

"I don't understand how, after the humiliating war of 2008, when Russia clearly demonstrated its true attitude toward Georgia... Frankly speaking, discussing Russia's real attitude toward anyone is in bad taste, as Russia always despises countries that are sovereign and independent. It always seeks total control over them through the methods it is demonstrating in Georgia. That means a completely pro-Moscow stance, maximum brutality toward alternative political movements and parties, monopolization of power, deprivation of freedoms and rights from citizens, and the suppression of the information space. We see all of this.

Will Russia succeed in this? No, I doubt it, to put it bluntly. Georgia’s main problem right now is its fear of what is happening in Ukraine. It understands that if Russia is not perceived as a defeated side… Subconsciously, Georgia is most afraid that if Russia doesn’t lose this war, it might be able to start a similar war in Georgia if Georgia defeats its alternative political movements. So, I understand this motivation.

However, the resistance we now see—the significant resistance in the streets of Tbilisi, Kutaisi, and Rustavi—shows that the absolute, simply absolute, majority of Georgian citizens are genuinely not interested in the policies pursued by 'Georgian Dream,' a pro-Russian party. Will Georgia fall under Russia's total control? No, I am absolutely certain of that too," said Podolyak.
