Gigi Tsereteli, a leader of the United National Movement, stated that if the “Georgian Nightmare Non-Recognition Act” is passed in the U.S. Congress, its impact will be “very severe.”
Speaking on PalitraNews’ program Day Newsroom, Tsereteli said that if the document is adopted, it will deter anyone in the U.S. from engaging with Georgia, even at an individual level.
“The U.S. political climate is such that support for Georgia is bipartisan. The authors of this bill are highly respected individuals, and it is very likely to pass unless some change occurs in Georgia beforehand, which seems unlikely given the statements made yesterday by the Georgian Dream leadership. This bill will have a very serious impact.
It’s painful to hear discussions of a ‘nightmare,’ but this term has unfortunately found its place in political vocabulary over time. It has been echoed in the European Parliament as well—how the ‘Dream,’ which stands for aspiration, has in reality turned into a nightmare. Their perspective reflects a stark contrast to the promises and future associated with the word ‘dream.’ The introduction of the ‘Russian law,’ the elections, and the announcement of postponing constitutional obligations related to Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration have led to a sentiment diametrically opposed to the idea of a dream. For many, this has become linked to an unexpected nightmare.
Even if the word ‘nightmare’ were removed from the bill, its passage would still send an extremely negative signal toward Georgia’s de facto government. It’s a situation none of us would have wanted to imagine, even in our worst nightmares, but here we are. The bill’s impact will be heavy—diplomatic and economic relations will be avoided as Georgia becomes toxic. Within the U.S., this law will halt all forms of engagement, and I don’t believe anyone would want to maintain any political or economic ties, even on an individual basis,” Tsereteli stated.
The “Georgian Nightmare Non-Recognition Act” is being introduced today by Republican and Democratic Congress members, according to Fox News.
The U.S. House of Representatives’ bipartisan group will present the bill, which seeks to ban the recognition of the Georgian Dream government.
The initiators of the act are Congressmen Joe Wilson (Republican) and Steve Cohen (Democrat).
