Eka Beselia: The system wants to display its cruelty – we are preparing a case for the Strasbourg Court

The system wants to display its cruelty through this court and the detainees. It seems this is one of its bargaining tools, as when you take hostages, you aim to present some kind of ultimatum," said lawyer Eka Beselia on PalitraNews' program 360 Degrees.

According to Beselia, the system reveals its true nature most clearly in court, as everything ultimately converges there.

"Through this court process and the detainees, the repressive system primarily seeks to show that it is ruthless and aims to intimidate people. They display their cruelty to frighten others, but they fail to understand that this fear tactic no longer works. Secondly, when you take hostages, you intend to use them as leverage to present an ultimatum. This seems to be one of Georgian Dream's bargaining tactics, so that when they retreat, they can say, 'We freed them.' This picture is clearly emerging; there’s no other explanation.

The system is most exposed in court because everything ultimately comes to a head there. The judiciary’s subservience is necessary for the system to pursue such political cases. If these judges were not serving the system, Georgian Dream could do nothing. If you take away the police force, the special units, and the judiciary from Georgian Dream, imagine who is left behind – absolutely no one! They can achieve nothing without these. The judiciary is the main pillar holding up this repressive system," Beselia stated.

Eka Beselia also spoke about Judge Ketevan Jachvadze, claiming that due to the prosecution’s weakness, the judge had to adopt the language of a prosecutor.

Beselia noted that she is preparing a case for the Strasbourg Court regarding the detainees arrested during the protests.

"Do you know why this judge lost control? Initially, she had a more neutral stance – changing courtrooms and so on. Suddenly, it seems she received orders. The defense side was strong; there were many lawyers demanding evidence, while the prosecution appeared very weak in comparison. It seems the judge was instructed to take on this role, and she suddenly began speaking like a prosecutor.

As a result, a motion was filed to recuse the judge because when a judge loses the image of neutrality and independence, their recusal becomes necessary.

We are already preparing this case for the Strasbourg Court. We aim to send it as quickly as possible, including all the elements that demonstrate this is a political trial. Tomorrow, the same will happen in the trials of the remaining innocent detainees. We will take these cases to the Strasbourg Court to ensure a swift legal response from the international judiciary," Beselia concluded.
