David Doiashvili: We demand the release of Andro Chichinadze and other political prisoners no later than January 20. If this demand is not met, we will move from passive protest to action. You will see the true power of art

"We demand a review of yesterday's decision, appealed by the lawyers of Andro Chichinadze and other political prisoners, and their release no later than January 20 of this year. If our demand is not met, we will move from passive protest to action. You will see the true power of art," said David Doiashvili, Artistic Director of the New Theatre named after Vaso Abashidze, at a press conference held in front of the theater alongside members of the troupe.

According to him, a compliant theater will never exist.

Doiashvili stated that if their demand is ignored, they will demonstrate what it means to fight for "one ordinary soldier."

"They forced us to leave our professional space and come outside for our audience, which has been out here for 45 days without going home.

We stopped because of the injustice happening in our country. We halted performances for Andro, who is illegally held captive by the regime without any evidence, as well as for other detainees. They left us no other choice. First, the politicians took away our profession with their cheap shows. Then the court showed its inept and untalented actions, which we witnessed yesterday, and today another tragedy occurred. The last hope that the state would care for talented and healthy young people is gone. Despite the fact that the entire arts community, with nearly 2,000 representatives, supported Andro Chichinadze by signing guarantees for his release, the state, through the court, has declared that such a field does not exist in Georgia today. They do not see us; we do not exist for them.

Until now, we chose a passive form of protest. Today, however, the troupe of the New Theatre named after Vaso Abashidze and I, as its Artistic Director, David Doiashvili, demand the review of yesterday's decision, appealed by lawyers, and the release of Andro Chichinadze, a member of our theater, and other political prisoners no later than January 20 of this year.

Considering that no evidence proving their criminal actions has been presented or exists, if our demand is not met, we will move from passive protest to action. You will see the true power of art. I promise, you will never see a compliant theater. You have already seen a halted theater, but you have not seen a theater fighting for one ordinary soldier. We will be that theater.

Freedom for Andro Chichinadze and other political prisoners," said David Doiashvili.
