"We all need new elections—free and fair elections—to restore trust," said Michael Roth, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag, while speaking to journalists in Tbilisi.
He discussed the current situation in Georgia, describing it as a "serious conflict between autocracy and liberal democracy."
"The situation remains extremely dire, but let me be very clear: this is not an internal dispute between the ruling party, civil society, and the opposition. Rather, it is a serious conflict between autocracy and liberal democracy. That is why we, as committed Europeans from France, Ukraine, Germany, and elsewhere, must speak out when democracy and freedom are under pressure. So, my message to the ruling party is clear: the only way to overcome this situation—after the rigged elections and constitutional violations—is through new elections. We all need new elections, free and fair, to restore trust," Roth stated.
He also welcomed sanctions imposed on those responsible for violations against peaceful demonstrators.
"I appreciate individual sanctions against those responsible for violations against peaceful demonstrators, for rigging elections, and for violating the constitution. I call on my friends and colleagues in the European Union to continue standing by the Georgian people. After speaking with the opposition, I am grateful that all opposition parties are united in demanding new elections—free and fair elections—so that the people of this wonderful country, at the heart of Europe, can have their say about its future," the Bundestag's Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman emphasized.
