Swedish Foreign Minister: We will continue supporting Georgia’s pro-European forces - we are well aware of Russian influence

"We will continue supporting Georgia’s pro-European forces—we are well aware of the presence of Russian influence," Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard stated during a parliamentary debate on Georgia in the Riksdag.

“In October 2024, the government instructed the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency to suspend remaining direct cooperation with the Georgian authorities. Instead, Sweden increased its support for Georgian civil society by 25 million Swedish kronor in 2024. Additionally, the foreign ministers of the Nordic-Baltic countries issued a joint statement urging the Georgian authorities to implement the OSCE recommendations and consider holding new elections based on those recommendations,” the minister said.

According to her, Sweden will continue to support pro-European forces in Georgia.

“We constantly seek the best ways to support democratic forces in Georgia. We are well aware of the presence of Russian influence, and this must be taken into account. We are continuously working on this and will persist in supporting Georgia’s pro-European forces,” noted Maria Malmer Stenergard.

The Swedish Foreign Minister also addressed potential visits to Georgia.

“The November 28 statement by ‘Georgian Dream’ that negotiations on Georgia’s EU membership will not begin until 2028 indicates a lack of genuine desire to implement the measures requested by the EU. As for potential visits to Georgia, careful consideration is needed regarding how such visits are conducted, given the risk of legitimizing ‘Georgian Dream,’” the Swedish Foreign Minister concluded.
