German Embassy: The deliberate persecution of people who defend their fundamental rights undermines democracy, the judiciary and the rule of law in Georgia

The deliberate persecution of people who defend their fundamental rights undermines democracy, the judiciary and the rule of law in Georgia, the German Embassy in Georgia says in a statement.

According to them, the German Embassy is closely monitoring the trials of citizens detained during the protests.

“The German Embassy is closely monitoring the ongoing trials against demonstrators, including those against Avtandil Kuchava and Davit Gogilashvili. We attended their trials at the Tbilisi City Court last week together with our European, American and British partners. In addition, we pay particular attention to whether the principles of the rule of law are respected in the courts. The detainees are accused of disobeying the orders of law enforcement agencies. Many of them also became victims of excessive police violence during the protests. The deliberate persecution of people who defend their fundamental rights undermines democracy, judicial system, and principles of the rule of law in Georgia," reads the statement.
