Levan Makhashvili: "If the opposition wanted to represent the state of Georgia, Mississippi, or South Carolina in Washington, that’s a different matter. But if they claim to represent Georgia, they were granted legitimacy by the people, and issues related to Georgia should be discussed here, in the parliament hall," said Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the Committee on European Integration, in response to the opposition's visit to Washington regarding Donald Trump's inauguration.

Makhashvili assessed that the opposition's purpose in traveling to Washington was "to stage a show and create the impression for the public that they represent something."

According to him, Donald Trump's views are completely, a full 180 degrees, opposite to those held by the Georgian opposition. However, as "political opportunists," they have changed their stances.

Makhashvili noted that Donald Trump's views align with those of the Georgian Dream party.

"Donald Trump has made executive decisions, one of which is the dismantling of the Deep State and the cleansing of American bureaucracy from Deep State influences. This is one of the significant areas where our views align.

This refers to informal influences, which often may not align with state institutions. Over recent years, it has become clear that such influences in the U.S., Georgia, and other countries were not in line with state interests.

Another major area of alignment is family values—what should be the foundation of society in the coming years. For us, this means the family, minors, and protecting them from harmful influences.

Another shared perspective is on foreign policy. Our vision is that the national government of every country should, first and foremost, take care of its society and state. This is the approach of both Donald Trump and us.

In fundamental issues, there is alignment, which gives hope for the restoration of U.S.-Georgia relations," Makhashvili stated.
