Unfortunately, during the debates in the European Parliament, we see imaginary Georgia, but the real Georgia is different - if they want to spread the same false accusations in such a masochistic manner, let them continue! - Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliament's European Integration Commission, said in response to the debates held on Georgia in the European Parliament.
According to Makhashvili, despite the fact that there were many good and positive messages during the debates held in the European Parliament, "overall, false accusations and false information were still voiced from the high rostrum of the European Parliament."
"If someone really wants to understand the case and have a correct idea about the current events in Georgia, they can look at the European Court of Human Rights and see what decisions the Strasbourg Court has made regarding Georgia. Look at many international indexes and see where Georgia is in terms of democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Most importantly, look at the European Commission report, which was published in October, and see where Georgia is in each direction, which concerns Georgia’s path to integration with the European Union.
Unfortunately, we often see an imaginary Georgia in the debates of the European Parliament, but the real Georgia is different. The real Georgia is what is mentioned in the decisions of the Strasbourg Court, in the conclusions of the European Commission, and in the reports of the US State Department. If they want to continue spreading the same false accusations in a masochistic mode, they can. I am not talking about the European Parliament in general, we are talking about the short-term political ambitions of individual European parliamentarians, who are using the institution of the European Parliament, sometimes something else, and are trying to spoil Georgia-EU relations.
We have a different desire - we are looking at this process in the long term, with a long strategy and a long vision. Our only desire is for relations with the European Union, including the European Parliament, to be within a normal and civil framework," said Levan Makhashvili.
