"Our Defense Secretary has made it quite clear that we will halt funding programs that support the Georgian government and limit defense and political contacts until the democratic backsliding in Georgia is stopped," UK Ambassador to Georgia Gareth Ward told journalists.

According to him, this position was announced by the United Kingdom in December and remains in place.

"There are certain programs we no longer fund. This is a measure we have taken until we see improvements in the democratic environment in Georgia, and when those improvements occur, it will be possible to re-engage in these programs," the Ambassador said.

He also mentioned that the UK continues to fund civil society in Georgia because it believes that civil society is a vital part of any democratic society.

The Ambassador emphasized that the UK wants Georgia's economy to succeed.

"Today, we see positive announcements regarding new partnerships and cooperation in Georgia's economy. The United Kingdom wants Georgia's economy to thrive. We believe Georgia should have an open and free economy and continue reforms to ensure this. We know there will soon be direct flights between London and Georgia. British Airways and EasyJet will begin flights to Georgia from the end of March. So, we want Georgia's economy to succeed, and economic reform should remain a priority," the Ambassador noted.
