Mzia Amaghlobeli has been on hunger strike for 16 days while in illegal detention. The Georgian Young Lawyers' Association (GYLA), as the organization defending her rights, calls on the Ministry of Justice to immediately issue a statement and periodically update the public on Mzia Amaghlobeli's health condition, the association wrote on social media.

GYLA also urges the Special Investigative Service to inform the public about the status of the case concerning degrading treatment against Mzia Amaghlobeli and explain why Batumi Police Chief Irakli Dgebuadze has not been suspended.

"Mzia Amaghlobeli told GYLA's Chairperson that her hunger strike is a protest against injustice and is not a demand for any privileges. As her rights-defending organization, GYLA calls on the Ministry of Justice to immediately issue a statement and periodically update the public about her health condition. The prison administration is obligated to ensure comprehensive and effective monitoring of her health according to a special protocol.

Additionally, GYLA addresses:

  • The Georgian Prosecutor’s Office: To immediately drop the unlawful charges against Mzia Amaghlobeli and request the court to change the preventive measure, as her actions do not constitute a criminal offense.
  • The Special Investigative Service: To inform the public about the progress of the case regarding degrading treatment against Mzia Amaghlobeli and explain why Batumi Police Chief Irakli Dgebuadze has not been suspended.

We remind the public that Mzia Amaghlobeli is being punished by the system for her activities, driven by political motives, and not because she committed any violation of the law," the statement reads.
