"Unfortunately, the Georgian government does not respect the will of the people, as we can see from the demonstrations on the streets of Tbilisi concerning the country's European future," Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže stated in Brussels ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council meeting.
"The European Union has taken certain actions, including a significant change to visa policies for government officials, who can no longer travel to the EU visa-free with diplomatic passports. This is a very targeted action, demonstrating that the EU's support will not extend to any activities or agencies linked to the government. Unfortunately, the government does not respect the will of the people, as reflected in the demonstrations on Tbilisi's streets regarding their European aspirations," Braže noted.
She added that Latvia has banned certain officials involved in suppressing peaceful protests and attacking journalists from entering the country.
"There is pressure, but there is also an open door to a European future, provided that the will of the people is respected," the Latvian Foreign Minister concluded.
