Batumi City Court releases dean of University of Arts and 3 students on bail, leave one student in custody

Batumi City Court Judge Levan Kolbaia released the dean of the University of Arts Mamuka Jorbenadze and 3 students of the same university - Guram Mikeladze, Davit Gvianidze and Giorgi Davitadze - on 5,000 GEL bail, while he left one student, Anri Kakabadze, in custody. In the case of Anri Kakabadze, the judge took into account the prosecution's argument that he had a previous conviction.

"I am emotional, my student is in custody. I am not a law specialist, I look at all this from a moral perspective. Anri Kakabadze has a great future, I do not see any threat from him," Mamuka Jorbenadze stated after his release.

For information, according to the investigation, the lecturer and students were arrested on charges of group violence in Batumi.

In particular, according to the investigation, on December 3, 2024, as part of a protest rally in Batumi, a group of protesters entered the Batumi University of Arts in order to hang a banner near the rector's office. The lecturer of the same university did not allow this, while the dean of the university verbally abused him. According to the investigation, it was established that the dean and his students later physically assaulted the rector's wife and her friend in the university building.
