The reservations related to the recognition of the authority of our delegation to the Council of Europe are a gross disrespect for the sovereignty of our country, and we could not leave this unanswered - we acted in accordance with our national pride, - Georgian Dream MP Levan Machavariani told journalists.
According to him, first of all, the red line is that they are asking us to hold new elections, since the elections in Georgia were “held in accordance with high standards.”
“They recognized the authority of our delegation, but all this was accompanied by some reservations that are unacceptable to us. First of all, the red line is that they are asking us to hold new elections. Our decision was based, of course, on national pride, which, unfortunately, our opponents lack. The elections in Georgia were held in accordance with very high standards.
"Of course, this is a temporary decision, as we are confident that just as common sense prevailed in the United States, common sense will ultimately prevail in Brussels and Strasbourg, and accordingly, our delegation will then begin its parliamentary work in PACE," Machavariani said.
For information, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe calls on Georgia to hold new elections in the coming months, release political prisoners and continue its path towards European integration.
Out of 134 deputies, 114 voted in favor of the PACE resolution, 13 voted against, and 7 abstained.
After the adoption of the aforementioned resolution, Georgian Dream announced that it was ceasing its work in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
As Tea Tsulukiani explained when announcing the decision, "a number of reservations in the document are unacceptable, as they are unfair and groundless."
