According to the Public Defender’s Office, the health condition of Mzia Amaghlobeli, the founder of "Batumelebi" and "Netgazeti," is currently satisfactory.
As stated in the released information, Mzia Amaghlobeli is undergoing medical examinations and is under intensive medical supervision.
"On January 31, Public Defender’s representatives, including a doctor, visited the hunger-striking journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli for the eighth time at Penitentiary Facility No. 5.
The doctor spoke with Mzia Amaghlobeli, reviewed her medical records, and consulted with the penitentiary facility’s medical staff.
At this stage, Mzia Amaghlobeli’s health condition is satisfactory.
However, it should be noted that she had pre-existing health issues before her detention, and there is a risk of complications due to prolonged hunger strike.
Mzia Amaghlobeli is undergoing medical examinations and remains under intensive medical supervision.
We also inform the public that the Public Defender’s Office has received the latest test results conducted this week, which, in addition to materials received yesterday, have already been provided to her lawyer.
Regarding questions about the formation of a medical council, we clarify that neither Mzia Amaghlobeli, her family, nor her legal representatives have requested such an initiative. The Public Defender is considering the possibility of inviting additional specialists within the scope of its mandate if such a necessity arises.
At this stage, the Public Defender is actively monitoring the provision of medical services to Mzia Amaghlobeli by the Penitentiary Service, with the assistance of a doctor employed in the office, as has been done in monitoring hunger strikes and other health issues of detainees in the past.
Additionally, we emphasize once again that the Public Defender and its office do not and will not interfere in the treatment of prisoners. Our mandate is to monitor the provision of medical services, which is directly related to the healthcare rights of detainees and convicts.
Furthermore, the Public Defender publicly states that if, based on the medical documents provided by our office to the defense side, they request additional medical examinations or other medical services, the Public Defender’s Office will respond accordingly within its competence.
The Public Defender’s Office will continue to request medical documentation from the Special Penitentiary Service regarding Mzia Amaghlobeli’s healthcare and will periodically visit the hunger-striking journalist. The public will be informed of the results while ensuring the protection of sensitive personal data."
