Mikheil Kavlashvili on pardoning: I don’t understand how one could not be happy that people are given the opportunity to return to their families. No one should dare to speculate on the situation of prisoners or their families!

In a statement about the pardoning, Mikheil Kavlashvili said: "We worked actively with several agencies in a short period of time so that people could return to their families as soon as possible. No one should dare to speculate on the situation of prisoners or their families!"

As Kavlashvili mentioned in his speech in Parliament, the humanitarian act is good, but "we must be maximally focused on crime prevention."

"I would like to address the recent pardoning act I carried out. I cannot understand the uproar raised by certain groups. I do not understand how one could not be happy that people are given the opportunity to return to their children, spouses, parents, and friends. We worked actively with several agencies in a short period of time so that people could return to their families soon. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each head and representative of the agencies involved in this process. Our main principle, which we followed, was to maintain a balance between humanity and public safety. We approached this issue with the utmost caution, and this approach will continue in the future. No one should dare to speculate on the situation of prisoners or their families!

It is clear that a humanitarian act is good, but we must be maximally focused on crime prevention. That is why we need to strengthen the promotion of a healthy lifestyle and sports. We must increase the role of the education system in the development of young people and work on improving social policy. The fight against drug addiction will also be one of the main directions of my activity. All of these efforts will have a preventive nature and will ensure that the risks of involvement in crime are as low as possible in our society, especially among young people," Kavlashvili said.

For reference, on January 19, Mikheil Kavlashvili, elected as president by the electoral college, pardoned 613 convicted individuals. The initial statement noted that the pardoning was done in connection with the Epiphany holiday, based on the "principle of humanism."
