Nona Kurdovanidze: Mzia Amaghlobeli's position remains unchanged—she demands to be returned to prison. According to the information she has, additional examinations are planned for today

The head of the "Georgian Young Lawyers' Association," Nona Kurdovanidze, stated that additional medical examinations will be conducted today for Mzia Amaghlobeli, the founder of "Batumelebi" and "Netgazeti." After visiting Amaghlobeli, Kurdovanidze told journalists that her position remains unchanged—she wants to be returned to prison.

"Mzia Amaghlobeli has been on a hunger strike for 30 days now. She continues her total hunger strike and remains here [at 'Vivamedi'] for additional examinations. However, her position remains unchanged—she demands to be taken back to prison. If all necessary examinations are conducted, her stance is that she should no longer be kept here [at 'Vivamedi'] and should be transferred back to prison. Of course, any decision regarding this must be based on the results of medical examinations. In this case, the medical assessment will be decisive. According to the information she has, additional examinations are planned for today, and after that, a decision will be made regarding her transfer.

Naturally, Mzia Amaghlobeli is physically weak after 30 days of hunger strike, but she says she feels relatively better than she did a few days ago, so she believes returning to prison is possible. However, I repeat, the decision must be made based on medical analysis, not just her personal desire to return. The medical assessment is crucial. Mzia Amaghlobeli is able to move around and speak normally, and she has no issues in that regard," Kurdovanidze stated.

According to Kurdovanidze, a representative of the Public Defender visits Mzia Amaghlobeli periodically, both in prison and at "Vivamedi."

"This is an additional form of monitoring. As for the additional visit of the medical group created by the Public Defender, we have no information on whether they plan to visit again. Typically, such visits are one-time events, followed by an assessment, which they will likely provide in writing, and which we will later request from the Public Defender," she noted.

Additionally, Kurdovanidze explained that GYLA (Georgian Young Lawyers' Association) plans to file a complaint regarding Mzia Amaghlobeli’s case with the European Court of Human Rights.

"The decisions made regarding the use of pretrial detention in Mzia Amaghlobeli’s case, which are entirely unfounded and unlawful, can now be appealed to the European Court of Human Rights, and we are working on this matter," the GYLA chairperson stated.
