Within the framework of Tbilisi City Hall's "Transplantation Program," liver and bone marrow (stem cell) transplants will, of course, continue to be funded this year, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze announced today at a municipal government meeting.
According to the mayor, Tbilisi City Hall implements many important programs in the fields of social welfare and healthcare.
"These programs are important because there are still families and individuals who need our support and assistance," said Kakha Kaladze.
The mayor stated that for stem cell transplants, the Health and Social Services Department fully covers pre-transplant tests, high-dose chemotherapy, three types of transplants (autologous, allogeneic, and haploidentical), and the management of both pre- and post-transplant periods.
"Tbilisi City Hall allocates between 10,000 and 235,000 GEL per patient. In 2024, 101 cases were funded, with approximately 7.5 million GEL transferred to clinics in Georgia and abroad. Last year, we also launched a new program, which is very important—funding for studies necessary to determine human leukocyte antigen (HLA) for the creation of a stem cell donor registry in Georgia. This study was funded for 133 registered volunteers and potential donors," the mayor noted.
Regarding liver transplantation, Kakha Kaladze stated that if needed, the program currently provides full funding, allocating 120,000 GEL per patient.
Since the program's launch in 2018, 50 liver transplant cases have been funded in Georgia.
"As a result of this program, it has been possible to extend and save the lives of dozens of people. First and foremost, I wish these individuals good health. For anyone in need, the municipality is ready to stand by you, assist you, and provide funding so that you can benefit from the programs we have introduced," said the mayor.
According to him, the 2025 budget includes up to 10 million GEL for the "Transplantation Program."
