Once, USAID was a beacon of hope for many countries, but what we are observing, and what the public has seen from the disclosed documents, is that USAID has essentially turned into an instrument of informal influence and a fig leaf to cover up the illegal activities they were conducting in Georgia and beyond its borders, - this statement was made to the media by Levan Makhashvili, the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on European Integration.
As Makhashvili states, many useful projects were implemented by USAID, but in many cases, it was used as a shield and a cover. He also mentions that there were projects that undermined democracy.
"This is not said by Levan Makhashvili, but by the President of the United States, the Secretary of State, and other high-ranking U.S. officials. There is much more behind this, which is not yet public, and the process is still ahead – the USAID-related scandal is just the beginning, and much more will be revealed.
The funding schemes of USAID and other foundations were actually aimed at distorting and overturning Georgia's electoral and political processes.
In the future, money will no longer be spent on illegal political activities in Georgia, and the media will be given the opportunity to be independent and focused on local needs," said Levan Makhashvili.
