Dainius Žalimas: Every judge in Georgia must fully realize they are betraying Europe and the rule of law and should feel the impact of sanctions

"It is crucial to specifically target individuals when making decisions on sanctions. Without the involvement of judges, law enforcement agencies, and prosecutors, all these fines, arrests, and imprisonments would not be possible," said MEP Dainius Žalimas during a press conference in the European Parliament alongside MEPs Petras Auštrevičius and Urmas Paet, as well as the leaders of the ‘Coalition for Change,’ Nika Gvaramia and Zurab Japaridze.

He emphasized that the European Parliament’s resolution also highlights the importance of supporting civil society in Georgia.

"It is very important that every judge fully understands that they are betraying Europe, the principles of the rule of law, and the people—and that they feel the impact of sanctions themselves.

Another key issue addressed in the resolution is that the [European] Commission must act immediately by swiftly redirecting all previously allocated financial resources from the Georgian government to the backbone of the Georgian state—civil society, NGOs, and the media. This must be done as quickly as possible to ensure their survival," Žalimas stated.
