Badri Japaridze: If "Georgian Dream" continues its misconduct, the European Parliament will recommend drastic measures – "Dream" knows exactly what it is doing

The European Parliament's resolution outlines a series of measures to be taken if the demands of the Georgian people are not met. If "Georgian Dream" continues its misconduct, the European Parliament will directly recommend taking more dramatic steps, said Badri Japaridze, one of the leaders of the "Strong Georgia" coalition, during an interview on Palitranews' program "360 Degrees."

According to Japaridze, if the situation in the country spirals out of control, it will have severe consequences for everyone.

"Georgian Dream," through its anti-national and anti-European actions, is provoking the European community and the European Union to take countermeasures. We have seen not only direct attacks on members of the European Parliament but also a series of statements from the de facto prime minister that insult them. When an MEP hears such statements, how do you think they will feel? What kind of decisions will they be inclined to make? 'Georgian Dream' knows exactly what it is doing – this is a deliberate betrayal of the country’s national interests.

The resolution I reviewed proposes a series of actions if the demands of the Georgian people are not met. These measures are directly linked to fulfilling the people’s demands. If 'Georgian Dream' continues its violence, imprisonment of individuals, and all the other misconduct it engages in, the European Parliament appears to be recommending more drastic measures.

I do not want any sanctions that would negatively impact the people, and we should not allow it to reach that point. If the situation gets out of control, it will have very serious consequences for everyone," Japaridze stated.

"The Claim That the Opposition Demands the Cancellation of Visa Liberalization is a Lie"Japaridze also refuted "Georgian Dream’s" claims that the opposition and civil society representatives are calling for the cancellation of visa liberalization, stating that this is false.

"No one is demanding the cancellation of visa liberalization – that is a lie. This is 'Georgian Dream’s' propaganda. What we are demanding is new elections.

We are in the streets alongside our fellow citizens precisely to prevent such an outcome—we are fighting to make sure it doesn’t happen. 'Georgian Dream,' on the other hand, is doing everything possible to make it happen, actively working to strip us of every benefit we have gained.

No one wants an apocalyptic scenario to unfold in this country—not us, not any of our partners. Everyone wants the 'Georgian Dream' to be forced to follow the will of the Georgian people, to schedule new elections. This is what is being lobbied for," Japaridze emphasized. The opposition politician also touched upon the issue of whether members of Giorgi Gakharia’s party would officially give up their parliamentary mandates. He expressed confidence that none of them will enter Parliament, but if their resignation is formally documented, the Parliament will become not only de facto illegitimate but also non-functional.

"None of us doubt that no one from Gakharia’s party intends to enter Parliament. However, they are still officially considered members of Parliament on paper.

One of the most critical aspects of the ongoing political and constitutional crisis in Georgia is the fact that the current Parliament, with 89 members, is illegitimate.

According to the Constitution, there is a minimum number of MPs required for Parliament to function properly.

Currently, on paper, including Gakharia’s party, there are 101 MPs. 'Georgian Dream' uses this as an argument to claim they have more than 100 members in Parliament. In reality, Gakharia’s people have no intention of attending, but their names remain on the official records.

If the number of MPs on paper drops to 89, it will officially confirm that Parliament is not only de facto illegitimate but also non-functional.

I am certain that my colleagues will not enter this Parliament, but I must emphasize that the Parliament’s official non-functionality will be recognized only when the number on paper drops to 89. That is our firm position," Japaridze stated.
