Radosław Sikorski: The European Union and candidate countries must pay special attention to the enlargement process – we expect a reversal of the anti-European trend established in Georgia by "Georgian Dream"

"We expect a reversal of the anti-European trend established in Georgia by 'Georgian Dream,' which came to power as a result of parliamentary elections held under questionable standards," – said Poland's Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski while discussing Poland’s priority as the presiding country of the EU Council.

The Polish Foreign Minister emphasized that, in light of geopolitical changes, the European Union and candidate countries must pay special attention to the enlargement process.

According to Sikorski, leaving a political vacuum in the EU's immediate neighborhood – in the Balkans, Ukraine, or Moldova – would open the door for other, non-democratic forces.

He also spoke about "negative trends" in the enlargement process, mentioning Georgia in this context and expressing hope for a reversal of the anti-European trend in the country. Additionally, he voiced support for the Georgian society’s pro-European aspirations.

"As the [EU Council] presidency, we are focused on the speed and quality of the EU's enlargement process to the east and south. Amid geopolitical changes and the many crises currently unfolding worldwide, the European Union and candidate countries must pay special attention to enlargement.

Leaving a political vacuum in our immediate neighborhood – in the Balkans, Ukraine, or Moldova – means opening the door to other, non-democratic forces. Our goal is to achieve progress in accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, as well as with the Western Balkan countries, in line with their level of engagement as EU candidate states.

Unfortunately, within the enlargement policy, we are also observing negative trends. We expect a reversal of the anti-European trend established in Georgia by 'Georgian Dream,' which came to power through parliamentary elections held under questionable standards. Poland’s [EU Council] presidency will support the pro-European aspirations of Georgian society," Sikorski stated.
