Trump’s policies pose a significant problem for the U.S. as a superpower. His statements also strain transatlantic relations, creating tensions with the European Union, which is a key ally. Political analyst Nika Chitadze made this statement on PalitraNews’ program "Resume" while discussing the recent remarks made by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Chitadze, Donald Trump is either delusional, believing he has certain capabilities, or a populist simply trying to win over ordinary Americans.
"Trump’s policies create major challenges for the U.S. as a global superpower. His statements also put transatlantic relations at risk, straining ties with America’s key ally—the European Union. Economically, the U.S. exports approximately $2 billion worth of goods to the EU annually. Additionally, America’s success in the Cold War was achieved through cooperation with Europe, spending nearly $5 trillion alongside its allies during that period.
Now, the U.S. risks being left without allies. Naturally, Russia can never become its ally. Trump has also threatened to impose tariffs on China and has already implemented a 10% tariff, to which China responded with a 15% tariff. He often makes populist remarks, either genuinely believing in his own capabilities due to narcissism or simply using populism to appeal to ordinary Americans," said Chitadze.
When asked whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could have prevented the war in Ukraine, Chitadze stated that it was impossible, as Russia was preparing for military action while simultaneously engaging in dialogue.
"Even before Russia invaded Ukraine, in April 2021, Russia had already stationed around 200,000 troops around Ukraine, including in Belarus, under the pretext of military exercises. At that time, Putin was testing the waters, but later, he clearly decided to proceed with the invasion. Before launching the war, he proposed that NATO return to its 1997 borders—an entirely unrealistic demand.
What was NATO supposed to do? Expel member states from the alliance? This was just a pretext for Putin to claim that he had attempted a ‘constructive dialogue’ but was refused, leaving him with ‘no other choice’ but to invade. These statements were aimed at his own domestic audience while war preparations were already underway," Chitadze explained.
