Legislative package has been initiated in Parliament to remove the mandatory participation of NGOs in public decision-making

A legislative package has been initiated in Parliament, which, once enacted, will remove the mandatory participation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the public decision-making process.

The changes affect 14 different laws and are part of a joint legislative initiative by the Georgian Dream and People's Power parties.

For example, after the proposed amendments take effect, candidates for the Prosecutorial Council and the Disciplinary Panel of Judges of Common Courts will no longer be selected from individuals nominated by non-entrepreneurial (non-commercial) legal entities. Additionally, representatives of NGOs will no longer be included in the selection committee for the Public Defender of Consumer Interests within the National Regulatory Authority.

According to the ruling party's decision, these changes will be reflected in all laws where NGO participation in public decision-making was previously mandatory.
