It seems that it has become clear to the public what kind of absurdity we are dealing with - the only feeling we are left with, especially in Lasha's case, is that we are dealing with personal revenge, some kind of vendetta, said Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliament's Committee on European Integration, in response to the statement made by the non-governmental organization "Transparency International Georgia" regarding the individuals sanctioned by the Baltic countries.
He stated that they are trying to target people who are highly respected in society.
"Before this information was published, we did not have any special expectations that they would try to explain their decision with correct or valid arguments. Especially after this information was released, I think it became clear to the public what kind of absurdity we are dealing with. It is complete absurdity when people are sanctioned for the reasons stated. The only feeling we are left with, especially in Lasha's case, is that we are dealing with personal revenge, some kind of vendetta. They are trying to target people who are highly respected in society. Of course, the arguments that someone in another country, with citizens who have no connection to the Baltic states or the European Union, had some incident, are absolute absurdity. I don't know if there is any similar example in the history of sanctions. This shows that this is only and solely an excuse to create a political agenda here in Georgia and to create the noise that we often talk about. In reality, they are trying to create noise as if something is happening. The reality is that a few states and the ruling forces of those states are trying to hide behind the European Union institutions, our large partner organizations, in order to create a political agenda in Georgia and manipulate the thoughts of the Georgian people. In reality, nothing will come of it. This is just the continuation of a movie. We've seen this movie before," said Makhashvili.
For reference, "Transparency International Georgia" published information regarding individuals sanctioned by Estonia, discussing the reasons behind the sanctions.
"The current members of the 'Georgian Dream' party and former member of parliament: Irakli Zarkua, participated in the group violence in Abu Dhabi; Viktor Sanikidze, participated in the group violence in Abu Dhabi; Gela Samkharauli, participated in the group violence in Abu Dhabi; Lasha Talakhadze, known for his aggressiveness; Beka Odisharia, known for his aggressiveness and hate speech, was the former honorary consul of Latvia," the statementreads.
