The actions of the representatives of the Theater University administration clearly demonstrate that they are not respecting the rights of students, but rather the opposite, - this is stated in the statement of the Georgian Young Lawyers' Association (GYLA).
The GYLA emphasizes in the statement that it has repeatedly called on the administrations of higher educational institutions in Georgia to respect and protect students' freedom of expression.
"On March 10, 2025, it became known that students participating in the ongoing protest at the university had their student status revoked. The university administration cites the decision of the Ethics Commission as the basis for this, claiming that the students violated norms. The unsubstantiated and vague decision regarding the suspension of the students' status was communicated to them via email on March 10 at 10:04 AM.
It is concerning that this event is accompanied by an incident at the university the day before, when protest participants were first asked to leave the university building and then nine students were fined 5,000 GEL by the police.
Under the pretext of conducting disinfection work, the university administration asked students to leave the building. The students requested a separate space where they could continue their peaceful protest.
Despite this request, the university administration did not provide an alternative space for the students and, with the involvement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs representatives, demanded that they leave the building. The GYLA has repeatedly called on the administrations of higher educational institutions in Georgia to respect and protect students' freedom of expression.
However, the aforementioned actions of the Theater University administration representatives clearly show that they are not respecting the rights of students, but rather the opposite,” the GYLA statement reads.
