"It is very interesting that mutual respect is not reflected in this text, which is always present in diplomatic statements—both sides express mutual respect," said Giorgi Butikashvili, a member of the "Coalition for Change," in response to the statement issued by the U.S. Embassy regarding the meeting between Ambassador Robin Dunnigan and Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili during PalitraNews' "Resume" program.
According to Butikashvili, the demands presented by Dunnigan to Maka Bochorishvili will not be easy for "Georgian Dream" to fulfill.
"The tone of this text is quite harsh and undiplomatic; demands are stated directly, and it is clear that these demands will not be easy for 'Georgian Dream' to comply with. Considering the previous statements from U.S. congressmen, the red lines are Georgia’s strategic partnership with China, formalized by 'Georgian Dream.' The same applies to relations with Iran. Congressmen, including Wilson, have repeatedly raised concerns in recent months about Georgia's growing business ties with Iran, its relationship with China, and the Anaklia Port, which is also a red line for the Trump administration. The embassy’s statement seems to align with these concerns—if we assess it from a strategic U.S. perspective, it’s clear that these are the key issues.
"It is also very interesting that mutual respect is not reflected in this text, which is always a characteristic of diplomatic statements—both sides usually express mutual respect. The Georgian Foreign Ministry’s statement differs significantly from what the U.S. Embassy actually wrote.
"Additionally, the ambassador's stern expression, distance, and the way she stood with Maka Bochorishvili were quite striking. Questions arose because she referred to her as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. However, when entering negotiations, which this meeting resembled, such designations are accepted and appropriate," Butikashvili noted.
For context, today, U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Robin Dunnigan met with Georgia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maka Bochorishvili. According to the statement released by the embassy, the ambassador presented Bochorishvili with the key priorities of President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio, as well as the steps "that Georgia can take to demonstrate a serious commitment to improving relations with the United States."
