March 31 is an important date for Georgia as the day of the independence referendum, but we must also turn it into a very significant date, – this was stated by the chairwoman of the "United National Movement," Tina Bokuchava, while discussing the protest rally planned for March 31.
As Bokuchava noted on PalitraNews' program 360 Degrees, March 31 should become the final deadline for discussions on unity.
According to her, if unification does not take place, specific actors who oppose this unification should be named.
"During the meeting with the president, we discussed the March 31 protest rally. It is an important date for Georgia as the day of the independence referendum, but we must also turn it into a very significant date. We definitely have the opportunity to use this day to express unity. However, this does not depend on the 'National Movement' alone, nor on any single party or the president; it depends on the entire political spectrum.
The 'National Movement' has supported a united front, including before the elections. Even today, I believe that this is the right, short, and certain path to victory. If other political forces fail to realize this, no one can be forced into unification.
March 31 should be the final deadline for this discussion. It is not advisable for this issue to always be accompanied by disappointment that the opposition failed to unite again, and so on. If this unification does not happen, specific actors who oppose it must be named.
Despite significant differences, the most fundamental one with President Zurabishvili is her refusal to pardon President Saakashvili. This would have been an important step for consolidating society and moving beyond party lines and past conflicts. A political prisoner should not be defined based on anyone’s political preferences,"* – Bokuchava stated.
She also spoke about the reasons behind selling the central office of the "United National Movement" on Kakheti Highway. According to Bokuchava, the reason for the sale was to relocate the office to the city center, where protests are taking place daily, and it was also related to financial considerations.
"We considered it very important for the 'National Movement,' as the main opposition force, to be represented in the city center. This does not mean that we will not continue our active work, including in the regions, where the 'National Movement' has strong organizations. In Tbilisi, the fight is happening on Rustaveli Avenue, so it was important for us to be closer to the epicenter.
Of course, this was also a financial decision, to enable us to participate effectively in protest activities. Various factors influenced our decision," – Bokuchava stated.
