The initiative to reinstate the "treason against the homeland" article in the criminal code has been approved in the second reading.
During the plenary session of Parliament, the bill, which adds Article 307¹ to the "Criminal Code," was supported by 85 votes.
Article 307¹ will regulate criminal liability for treason against the homeland. According to this provision, actions considered as treason by a Georgian citizen or a stateless person with a status in Georgia include: violating the territorial integrity of Georgia, entering into or negotiating unconstitutional treaties, violating Georgia's external security, joining foreign intelligence services, undermining Georgia's defense capability, disclosing state secrets, espionage, conspiracy or rebellion aimed at violently overthrowing Georgia’s constitutional order, sabotage, and/or assisting in hostile activities for a foreign country, foreign organization, or organization under foreign control.
It is noteworthy that all of these actions, listed under "treason against the homeland," are already punishable under other articles of the "Criminal Code."
The authors and initiators of the bill are deputies from the "Georgian Dream" faction and the political group "Power of the People."
