There is political symbolism in the sanctions, later, in various volumes, even Germany joined us, this means that the symbolism works, - the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, said at the press conference during his visit to Tbilisi.
In particular, one of the journalists asked Landsbergis about the statements of the representatives of the Georgian Dream, who say that the sanctions imposed against them by the Baltic countries “mean nothing”.
According to Landsbergis, he is surprised by the reaction of the representatives of the Georgian Dream.
“There is political symbolism in this. Obviously, I have never denied it. We were the first country to come up with this [sanctions] proposal, together with Estonia and Latvia. I immediately announced that there is political symbolism in this - to show that it is possible.
If we cannot reach an agreement among 27 member states, even the smallest country can do more than a country of 60 million, 40 million. That is, if we can do it, there will be enough arguments for them to follow us. And they did. Later, to varying degrees, even Germany joined us. So this means that symbolism works.
We are the Rustaveli demonstrators in Europe. We may not change anything, but we take up the flag, we go out into the streets and demand justice. And we get some justice, maybe not all of it, but part of it. If we don’t do this, then there will be nothing at all.
I am very surprised by the reaction. It shows - dictators are very fragile, in their egos, in their glass houses, they are so fragile. Because if they were not [fragile], they would not have reacted. If it doesn’t bother you - why are you talking about it? Why do you comment on my Twitter and say “I don’t care”. If you comment, if you say something about something small - it bothers you, it means you are fragile and you worry, it means I have to continue my work”, - said Landsbergis.
