The common courts of Georgia did not accept the decision of the European Court of Human Rights regarding Azerbaijani journalist Afqan Sadigov and kept him in extradition detention.
This was stated today at a press conference by Keti Chutlashvili, a representative of the "Social Justice Center."
According to her, the European Court decided to apply temporary measures on February 27 and suspended the extradition procedure. As Chutlashvili noted, the courts made the decision not to satisfy the European Court's temporary measures without a hearing, and the "Social Justice Center's" appeals for Afqan Sadigov's release from extradition detention were even considered inadmissible.
"The Tbilisi City Court, without a hearing, deemed our motion inadmissible and left Afqan Sadigov in detention. According to the judge, the adoption of temporary measures by the European Court is not a basis for changing the extradition detention of the person concerned. We appealed the first-instance decision in the appellate court. The court again deemed our appeal inadmissible," said Keti Chutlashvili.
The "Social Justice Center" believes that the court's decisions are unfounded and contradict both national and international legal requirements.
Regarding Afqan Sadigov's health condition, the center reports that after ending his hunger strike, he began eating again, and his condition is improving.
For the record, Azerbaijani journalist Afqan Sadigov was arrested in Georgia on August 3 of this year. He is accused of two episodes of extortion based on an investigation underway in Azerbaijan.
