The chairman of the "European Democrats" party, Paata Davitaia, explains the reasons why he attended the session of the parliamentary temporary investigative commission studying the activities of the "United National Movement" government.
As Davitaia noted, since today's session concerns the August 2008 war, every word he says will be "carefully weighed because this broadcast is being watched by the Russian Federation as an occupying country."
"First of all, I want to clarify the reasons for my attendance at the commission session, given the high public interest. You know that the topic of the August war is extremely important from the perspective of state interests. Certain political parties have always offered various interpretations in this regard. It is crucial to establish objectivity and clarify the position on how work on this issue has been conducted.
I will also highlight the materials I provided to the Prosecutor's Office of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. You are aware of the legal situation—that an investigation into the war is ongoing. Therefore, every word I say is highly significant, as I am one of the participants in collecting and transferring evidence for the international investigation. Every word I say will be carefully weighed because this broadcast and my testimony are being watched by the Russian Federation, an occupying country. Any word of mine could be used against the Georgian state at the ICC's Prosecutor’s Office. I will present the existing information in full compliance with the law," said Paata Davitaia.
For reference, today's session of the temporary investigative commission focuses on the situation in Georgia's occupied territories from 2004 to 2008 and the August 2008 war.
