Irakli Bebua, who was detained in occupied Abkhazia, will be released on March 30, 2025, according to media reports. This was stated by the head of the so-called Ministry of Internal Affairs of Abkhazia, Robert Kiut.
Kiut denied reports that Bebua would be released from detention before his sentence was completed.
"He was arrested on September 30, 2020. Everyone probably knows this fact. He burned the national flag, for which he was sentenced to nine years of criminal liability. In total, he is supposed to serve four years and six months. His detention period expires on March 30. Accordingly, we will be obliged to release him. No one is planning to release this person early. Everything is happening in accordance with the articles and conditions set by the court," Kiut stated.
For reference, there are no penal colonies in occupied Abkhazia, only pretrial detention facilities. Due to this, under the so-called law, one year of imprisonment is considered equivalent to two years.
