The initiative to reintroduce the "Treason" clause in criminal legislation was adopted by Parliament on the third reading.

In a plenary session of Parliament, the draft law, which proposes adding Article 307¹ to the Criminal Code, was unanimously supported with 86 votes in favor.

Article 307¹ will regulate criminal liability for treason. According to this provision, actions committed by a Georgian citizen or a person with a residence status in Georgia, such as the violation of Georgia’s territorial integrity, signing or negotiating unconstitutional agreements, compromising national security, joining a foreign intelligence service, undermining Georgia’s defense capabilities, disclosing state secrets, espionage, conspiracy or rebellion aimed at violently changing Georgia's constitutional order, sabotage, or assisting foreign countries, foreign organizations, or organizations under foreign control in hostile activities, will be considered treason.

It is important to note that all these actions listed under "treason" are already punishable under other articles of the Criminal Code.

The authors and initiators of the draft law are members of the “Georgian Dream” faction and the political group “People’s Power.”
