The women's organization of the party "Gakharia for Georgia" is issuing a statement regarding the abolition of the Gender Council

The women's organization of the party "Gakharia for Georgia" has issued a statement regarding the abolition of the Gender Council.

According to the statement, the abolition of the Gender Council is not merely a technical decision. "Georgian Dream" is attempting to further deteriorate the status of women's rights in Georgia and weaken their voice in the public sphere.

The organization also noted that the previous parliament's decision to abolish gender quotas for parliamentary lists was a direct blow to the increase of women's political role and their involvement in representative bodies.

The de facto government of "Georgian Dream" has abolished the permanent parliamentary council on gender equality, which once again demonstrates the party’s attitude toward gender equality. This council was supposed to serve as an effective coordination platform working on gender policy development, combating violence against women, and strengthening women's political empowerment. Although in recent years the council had mostly existed only formally, its abolition (instead of its activation) clearly shows that gender equality issues have been entirely removed from "Georgian Dream’s" agenda.

The abolition of the Gender Council is not the first time "Georgian Dream" has dismantled mechanisms essential for women's political empowerment. In the previous parliament, the ruling party eliminated gender quotas for parliamentary lists, dealing a direct blow to the increase of women's political role and their participation in representative bodies.

Against this backdrop, the de facto government's statements about combating violence against women appear particularly cynical, especially when femicide cases have reached record levels in recent years and women's political role remains minimal. The state fails to ensure women's protection, does not offer them effective legal enforcement, and is gradually dismantling the progress achieved during "Georgian Dream's" rule through joint efforts.

The abolition of the Gender Council is not merely a technical decision—it is a political choice that once again confirms that "Georgian Dream" seeks to further worsen the status of women's rights in Georgia and weaken their voice in the public sphere," the statement reads.
