A confrontation occurred in Zugdidi between citizens gathered at the April 9 Memorial and the police.

Police approached the citizens holding a protest near the memorial and informed them that clergy were scheduled to perform a memorial service (paraklesis) in honor of those who died on April 9, 1989. The citizens expressed a desire to attend the service, but the police did not allow them to do so, which led to shouting and confrontation.

“This was an attack on peaceful protesters. We were pushed away from the April 9 Memorial. This is how Russia, the Russian regime, and the Russian system treat their own citizens. These people [the authorities] need to understand one thing clearly — no one has ever won a fight against their own people, and they won't either. Our goal was to honor the memory of those who died on April 9, which is why we were peacefully gathered here. Some citizens even spent the whole night here.Their attitude toward us shows that our country is being ruled by a Russian-style regime.Sadly, the Georgian police have become enforcers of Russia’s agenda,” said one of the citizens.
