I welcome the imposition of sanctions by the United Kingdom against Georgian officials, said U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (Democratic Party), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on social platform X.
"I applaud the United Kingdom for sanctioning Georgian officials who have been derelict in their duty to protect the rights of the Georgian people. Those responsible for brutal violence against protestors must be held accountable," wrote Jeanne Shaheen.
For context, on April 10, the United Kingdom government sanctioned four individuals under the Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime. According to the UK government, this sanctions package targets Georgian officials responsible for serious human rights violations, in accordance with the 2020 Global Human Rights Sanctions Regulations.
