Saba Buadze: No individual's visit to Tbilisi can legitimize an illegitimate power – The ‘Georgian Dream’s’ claimed ‘achievements’ are lies and an insult to the people

“The 13 years of ‘Georgian Dream’ governance represent a massive attack on the pillars of Georgia’s sovereignty, a war against national consciousness, and decisions made against the Georgian state. Their so-called ‘achievements’ are lies and an insult to the public,” – said Saba Buadze, a member of the political group For a Strong Georgia, during an appearance on PalitraNews' Day’s Newsroom.

In this context, Buadze emphasized that the most telling indicator of ‘Georgian Dream’s’ political legacy is the 700,000 citizens relying on social assistance, tens of thousands of malnourished children, struggling pensioners, and the mass emigration of the country’s most capable workforce.

Commenting on the statement issued by Georgian Dream’s political council, Buadze added that there is no such thing as an independent judiciary in Georgia – it is controlled by a “clan.”

“As for peace, the main question is: what have they done to ensure long-term peace and security? In unstable situations, fear of war is normal, but what steps has this government taken to secure our country and make us feel safer today? The answer is: not only have they done nothing, but their daily statements and actions provoke our enemies and threaten our national security. It is a proven fact – they have done nothing to position Georgia’s interests within the global conversation around the transformation of international security architecture. We are living under continued ‘borderization’ and terror. Ask those living near the occupied territories how safe they feel today,” – said Buadze.

He also dismissed Georgian Dream’s claims that Western sanctions do not affect them, calling it a lie. According to him, if Georgian Dream fears anything, it is sanctions.

“No matter how much they try to downplay or discredit the impact of sanctions, it doesn’t work. These people cannot take part in any legitimate financial transactions. For those engaged in business – and that includes the majority of Georgian Dream – it is a deeply concerning message that they could be fully sanctioned and isolated from the Western economic system. Everyone knows well the impact of Western sanctions – dismissing them is nothing but self-deception by Georgian Dream,” Buadze stated.

He also commented on the visit of OSCE Secretary General Helga Maria Schmid to Georgia, suggesting that Georgian Dream may be trying to frame this as a form of legitimization – but, he stressed, that is not the case.

According to Buadze, such visits are always a gesture of support for the country, not the ruling party.

“When the OSCE Secretary General speaks about the importance of stability, it is a clear acknowledgment that the current political instability in Georgia is of concern to everyone, and achieving stability is crucial. The discussion is about how to achieve that stability. The political crisis in Georgia cannot be resolved without calling new parliamentary elections and releasing political prisoners. Georgian Dream might try to use this visit to present a veneer of legitimacy – but that is not how it works.

No individual’s visit can legitimize this illegitimate power, because the international context for Georgian Dream remains extremely unfavorable. Most importantly, our international partners clearly see that this regime lacks legitimacy from the Georgian people themselves. They see the deepening crisis of legitimacy that worsens with each passing day.

Georgian Dream still faces a very difficult international context,” Buadze concluded.
