Levan Sanikidze: It would have been better if the OSCE Secretary General’s visit had not taken place, but since the decision was made, I am sure messages about holding new elections and releasing political prisoners will be raised

“It would have been better if these messages were not delivered to 'Georgian Dream' in this form – representatives of such organizations typically come for negotiations, to once again attempt to bring the government back around,” – this is how Levan Sanikidze, a member of “Unity – United National Movement,” assessed the visit of the Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Feridun Sinirlioğlu, to Georgia.

Sanikidze believes that during the Secretary General’s meeting with Georgia’s Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili, the discussion likely touched upon defusing the political crisis in the country, holding new parliamentary elections, and releasing political prisoners.

“It would have been better if this visit had not happened, but we’ve seen instances where, when necessary, the West talks to Hezbollah and Hamas in order to pass messages. And in this case, to deliver messages to 'Georgian Dream', whose primary goal should be defusing the political crisis in the country, holding new elections, and releasing political prisoners. However, we believe that the West should not provide additional propaganda fodder to 'Georgian Dream.' But since the decision has been made, I am certain that the issues of holding new elections, releasing political prisoners, and resolving the political crisis will be directly raised during the meeting. Still, it would have been better if these messages were not delivered to 'Georgian Dream' in this way.

Representatives of such organizations usually come to negotiate and attempt once again to bring the government back from the critical point — which in this case would be the cancellation of visa liberalization,” – said Levan Sanikidze.

For context, the OSCE Secretary General, Feridun Sinirlioğlu, is visiting Georgia. Today, he met with Georgia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maka Bochorishvili. As part of the visit, meetings are also planned with top representatives of the executive and legislative branches. According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Secretary General will also visit the village of Odzisi, near the occupation line.
