According to Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Aleksandre Darakhvelidze, currently there are between 20,000 and 25,000 illegal migrants in Georgia.
According to him, it is difficult to establish the exact number, since there is no unified registration system.
Darakhvelidze spoke about the situation related to foreign migrants at the joint session of three parliamentary committees, where he presented a package of legislative amendments prepared by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in this regard.
“They [migrants] are registered by various agencies. If even one letter is changed in their first and last names, this leads to duplication - as you know, some foreigners have five- or six-word first and last names. According to rough estimates, there are currently 20,000 to 25,000 illegal migrants in the country - it could be more. This includes people who are in the asylum system, who have residence permits and visas,” Darakhvelidze said.
The package of legislative amendments initiated by the government regarding foreign citizens and foreign migrants was discussed and supported today at the joint session of the European Integration, Foreign Relations, and Health Committees.
