The Ministry of Internal Affairs is working on regulating the employment of foreign migrants in the Georgian labor market and plans to submit a special initiative to the Parliament on the topic of labor migration in the near future.
As Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Aleksandre Darakhvelidze stated at the joint session of three parliamentary committees, there are cases when a Georgian employee loses his job and is replaced by a foreigner. According to Darakhvelidze, “this causes legitimate indignation among Georgian citizens.”
“We will have a coordinated proposal with the State Security Service, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Health on how to solve this problem.
Due to the fact that the legislation in this part is flawed, there have been cases when Georgian employees lose their jobs and are replaced by foreigners. In this case, the employer has no requirements, is not obliged to notify the state. Therefore, the issue will be regulated and we will submit a package of amendments to the Parliament. This will allow us to control it and not face the threat that we face today.
I remember when a representative of a foreign country said that they would open labor residence permits for us, but there would be a specific limit for Georgian citizens. If other countries have such mechanisms, why shouldn’t they be regulated here?! The issue is causing justifiable indignation among our citizens,” Darakhvelidze said.
Today, the Parliament's European Integration, Foreign Relations, and Health Committees discussed and supported a package of legislative amendments initiated by the government regarding foreign citizens and foreign migrants, the implementation of which will tighten immigration policy.
