This shameful document in no way represents a document bearing the spirit of friendship with Georgia, and the hand of the global “deep state” is very clearly and unequivocally visible here, - the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, Davit Matikashvili, said wen speaking about the MEGOBARI Act.
According to him, the Georgian side expects that under the new US administration, Georgia-US relations will essentially start from a new page and “these shameful documents will not be an obstacle to the re-establishment of relations”.
"Unfortunately, this document is not actually a friendly act, and we have completely different expectations from the new US administration. The rhetoric, statements, and leitmotif of the Donald Trump administration, the new US president himself, largely coincide with the rhetoric and policy of the Georgian Dream, the Georgian government. Accordingly, it is very important for us that, in the wake of these coincidences and the current situation in the foreign policy context, a substantial reset should take place, a new page should start in relations, a real strategic partnership, and not just on paper. As for that act, this shameful document - naturally, it does not represent a document in any way bearing the spirit of friendship with Georgia, and here the hand of the "global deep state" is very clearly and unambiguously visible. We naturally hope that under the new US administration, our relations will essentially start from a new page and these shameful documents will not be an obstacle to the re-establishment of Georgian-American relations," Matikashvili said.
The US House of Representatives will consider the MEGOBARI Act today.
The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee supported the MEGOBARI Act on March 27.
The bill, titled Mobilizing and Enhancing Georgia’s Options for Building Accountability, Resilience, and Independence (MEGOBARI) Act, was introduced in the House of Representatives last year by Congressman Joe Wilson, and was reintroduced this year in the 119th Congress by Congressman Steve Cohen [D-USA], Congressman Richard Hudson [R-USA], and Congressman Mark Wiese [D-USA]. According to the congressmen, the MEGOBARI Act expresses support for the Georgian people and provides for sanctions against Georgian officials for, among other things, human rights violations and the undermining of democracy.
