Giorgi Melashvili: Any attempt to downplay the significance of the “MEGOBARI Act” harms “Georgian Dream.” The more they shift into a mode of denial, the more painful it will be when reality hits them

Any attempt to downplay the significance of the “MEGOBARI Act” harms “Georgian Dream” itself, – said Giorgi Melashvili, founder of the European-Georgian Institute, on Palitra News’ program “Political Space.”

According to Giorgi Melashvili, the document is extremely serious and problematic for Georgia.

“The document has already been passed by the House of Representatives. Next, it will be reviewed by the Senate, and then signed by the President. Any attempt to downplay the significance of this document harms Georgian Dream itself. The more they shift into a mode of denial, the more pain they will feel when reality hits them with full force.

The document is, of course, very serious and very problematic. Personally, I deeply regret that the situation has reached this point. Instead of continuing and deepening the strategic partnership with the United States, that partnership has been suspended, and we are now talking about a sanction-type document,” said Melashvili.

He also stated that “Georgian Dream” is trying to present itself as a monolith, but in reality it is a “fragile colossus.”

“Georgian Dream is trying to present itself as a monolithic, iron-and-concrete force, but in reality it is a very fragile colossus. Their only way out would have been for U.S. policy to become fully favorable toward Georgian Dream — but that didn’t happen. On the contrary, the opposite happened,” Melashvili said.
