Latvian ambassador says Latvia also intends to ban visa-free travel for Georgian citizens holding diplomatic passports

We follow our internal procedures, so I cannot name a date, but I think it will happen in a month, or it will take more time, but we will also join this decision, - Latvian Ambassador to Georgia Edīte Medne told InterpressNews, responding to Estonia's decision to cancel the visa-free regime for holders of Georgian diplomatic passports.

"We follow our internal procedures, so I cannot name a date, but I think it will happen in a month, or it will take more time, but we will also join this decision. It may take more time due to the procedures, but it will happen," the ambassador said.

In addition, the ambassador said that joining the European Union is very important for Georgia and Latvia went through the same path years ago.

“When we, Latvians, joined the European Union 21 years ago and became a member state, it was a long, almost 10-year accession process and the requirements for joining the EU were the same for us as for other countries and maybe it was not an easy path, but in the end, we united, fulfilled all the requirements and joined the EU.

I want to tell all Georgians to work together, to unite for the purpose of joining the EU. We are really concerned about what is happening in Georgia and as I said, today is a day of celebration, today is a day of hope and I can say that our life has really changed since joining the EU and now we, Latvia, are part of a safe, rules-based democratic world,” the Latvian ambassador said.
