Democracies need strong protection, agreements alone can never guarantee peace, Georgia learned this in 2008, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, said at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit.
“Ukraine learned this in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea and now after three years of full-scale war with Russia. The answer to the question of how to stop the historical cycle of Russian aggression against democracies is in our hands,” Kallas noted.
According to her, the strongest guarantee of security is strong Ukraine.
She said that when the war is over, it must be over forever.
“To achieve this, we must also increase the pressure on Russia and strengthen Ukraine on the battlefield today. Russia has demanded sanctions relief. We know that sanctions are working. Last week, we presented the 17th package of sanctions. We also set 2027 as the deadline for cutting energy ties with Russia. We have recently allocated 1 billion euros for the Ukrainian defense industry to support Ukrainian companies and provide additional military assistance,” Kallas noted.
