“I very honestly told the Georgian side that this is one of my greatest disappointments — on the very day we decided that they should have a European future, they chose to go in the opposite direction,” said Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel during a press conference held within the framework of the Council of Europe’s ministerial meeting.

He emphasized that there must be honesty in relations with Georgia — if they go in the wrong direction, they must be told that they are moving further away from Europe.

“I very sincerely told the Georgian side that this is one of my biggest disappointments. On the day we decided they should have a European future, they chose to move in reverse. And on the day we said, ‘Let’s start the honeymoon,’ they began divorce proceedings. So yes, it’s difficult.

And we have to be honest with them and say: if you go in the wrong direction, you’ll move further away from your European future — further than you were even last year,”* — said Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel, responding to a question about Georgia.
