The German Ambassador Peter Fischer is mistaken when he says that Georgia is attacking the European Union — if there is any talk of strained relations, the EU and the German Ambassador should look for the reasons within the EU’s own bureaucracy and their decisions! This statement was made today in Parliament by Georgian Dream MP Davit Matikashvili.

Matikashvili was responding to information released by TV company Imedi, according to which Peter Fischer met with “opposition activists” in Batumi.

According to Matikashvili, “The fact that the German Ambassador meets with radicals behind closed doors says a lot, and since there is a need to hide the topics of such meetings and speak about them in secret, we must assume these are issues that trouble the radicals.”

“It is a regrettable situation when the ambassador of a partner country meets secretly with representatives of the radical opposition. The ambassador’s attitude toward the elections held in Georgia and the decisions made by the people is an attempt to undermine the will of the population and redirect it in favor of global negative forces. This is very unfortunate!

The German Ambassador is wrong when he claims that Georgia is in any way attacking the European Union. I would urge him to thoroughly consider the chain of events that has unfolded regarding Georgia since the start of the war in Ukraine — how the candidate status was used as a tool against Georgia, in an attempt to drag the country into destructive processes. Unfortunately, the EU bureaucracy was very active in this regard. We saw how they attended anti-government rallies, where radicals openly shared their agendas; how they stood on stage and made public appeals — various officials from EU member states.

If we are discussing any sort of complication in relations, the EU and the German Ambassador should first look for the cause within the EU bureaucracy and its decisions, where anti-Georgian rhetoric is dominant.

This is the root cause, and it would be good if they found it in the right place!” said Davit Matikashvili.
